Strengthening teacher education is a top priority for The National Council on Teacher Quality. In December 2016, NCTQ published the Teacher Prep Review that examines and ranks 875 undergraduate elementary education teacher prep programs across the US.
Since the 2014 rankings, NCTQ found improvements around teaching reading instruction and diversity in selective programs. The report also reveals systemic weak preparation of teachers in mathematics and student teaching.
Specific to North Carolina, the top ranked programs are Elon and High Point University. The report aims to influence teacher prep programs to improve, school districts’ hiring practices, and high school students’ college choices.
“When programs improve, the big winners are of course future teachers and the children they will one day teach, but also the programs themselves…Programs who adopt an evidence-based model of teacher preparation are leading the way for others to follow.„
